Ethiopian Airlines, the fastest growing and most profitable African airline is pledging to plant one tree for every passenger it flies as part of a new tree planting initiative launched on September 7th in Entoto, Ethiopia.
More than 500 Ethiopian Airlines employees led by Tewolde Gebremariam, CEO of Ethiopian Airlines Group planted over 2000 seedlings around Entoto on the hills surrounding Addis Ababa. Ethiopian Airlines and its employees will continue to care for the seedlings until they develop into mature trees.
The airline has planted the trees in Entoto to provide long term environmental support to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam project due for completion in 2017. The dam will be the largest hydroelectric power plant in Africa.
Ethiopian Airlines supports a long term strategy to reduce the impact of its environmental footprint by operating a young, modern and efficient fleet of 67 aircraft with an average age of just seven years. Its fleet includes the environmentally friendly Boeing 787 with minimized CO2 emissions.
