Budapest Airport yesterday welcomed the announcement by Ryanair that it will launch five new routes from the airport from 25 March.
Linking the Central European airport with London Stansted, Birmingham and Bristol in the UK, Bologna in Italy and Dublin in the Republic of Ireland. The new routes, now on sale at www.ryanair.com will create up to 200 new local jobs according to Ryanair.
"We are delighted at this news from Ryanair and the addition of three new UK destinations, comprising two strong regional airports and another London airport together with an important link to Dublin and to Bologna in Italy. This is a great new year present," said Budapest Airport CEO Jost Lammers. "We have been courting Ryanair for some time to return to Budapest on a win/win basis and with the support of the Hungarian National Tourist Office, which has reinstated the Aviation Marketing Fund, we are very pleased to welcome them back with the start of the summer timetable."
Ryanair previously served Budapest from 2005 to 2010 with flights to Bristol, East Midlands and Dublin. It was encouraged back as Budapest is a popular destination for leisure travellers, renowned for its traditional Hungarian culture and hospitality as well as its vibrant night-life and historic spas built around natural hot springs and thermal pools.
Michael O'Leary speaking at a press conference at the city's downtown Intercontinental Hotel said he expected the five new routes to carry 200,000 passengers per year.
